My Story

Hello, again! Welcome to the re-launch!

Hello, again! Welcome to the re-launch!

My athlete life started around 4 years old, when I somehow ended up on a soccer field despite both parents having only played 1970’s “traditional” American sports of baseball/softball, basketball, field hockey and football. Soccer was my love and escape through very awkward and painful younger years. My love for running fast on fields found me on the rugby pitch playing for the Worcester Women’s Rugby Football club at age 23. And, until I FINALLY retired at age 37, I played as much rugby as I could having played for competitive 15’s and 7’s teams in Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Needless to say, my body went through a lot of pain. A lot of pulls, strains, tears, concussions, a broken nose, some on the fly facial “surgery”, and, yet, despite 14 years of highly competitive rugby, I never broke a major bone. I believe this is because of the training I did off the pitch including weight lifting, development of my optimal nutrition, physical recovery, adherence to my sleep requirements and some dabbling in sports psychology via free assistance from a rugby PhD psychology student. There’s probably some magic in there, too. Who knows.

At 36 years old my feet found the beauty of trail running and at age 37, my next LOVE, ultra-marathoning captured me. Between rugby and ultra-running, a firefighter and wonderful rugby teammate, introduced me to some brain-based knee exercises that bought me an extra year on the rugby pitch. And, those same drills got me safely running 50 mile trail/mountain races - and, running them well! Over 60 races in all sorts of distances from 10k to 100k with loads of top ten and even a few podium visits at some wicked gnarly races. All in my 40’s!

During all of this, from 20 years old to 34 years old, my high performance mindset saw me through a lot of success in the small business corporate world, as a sales consultant and later, a project manager. When the expectations of work changed in the early 2000’s, and we were suddenly forced to be connected all of the time, I immediately recognized the emotional pain that was triggering my Crohn’s disease to flare. And, sacrificing my life for status, for a big paycheck, was not going to help me live a long, healthy, happy life. I found myself wanting to support other stressed out corporate people like me. So, at age 35, I became a personal trainer who focused on helping folks use movement to manage stress with a huge emphasis on keeping female-bodied people moving. Let’s just say that lots of San Franciscans needed me. There were so many folks showing up to the gym with chronic pain that my interest and personal history led me to lots of certifications in movement to manage pain. Again, San Franciscans needed me. Then, the pandemic hit and Ernie was born.

The stillness that the pandemic offered was the perfect time to rehabilitate this beat up body and stressed out mind through daily yoga. My goals went from aiming to run a 50 miler faster to just simply touch my toes and meditate, unguided, for 10 minutes. This shift in speed was, in retrospect perfectly timed, but, still so uncomfortable at times- an incredible challenge for this body that has needed extreme movement to manage anxiety. I also had a few "parenting" injuries from packing and lifting Ernie then Esme.  Parenting is a sport!! Now, I’ve been stay-at-home parenting our now 5 and 2 year olds with yoga and meditation as my partners in this season of life. I’ve added back in weight training plus cardio via our Peloton bike to my mostly daily yoga and meditation practice. Some weeks, I am moving well. Some weeks, we are all sick. Even though movement continues to feel like a requirement, I’ve learned to be more mentally flexible with the inconsistency, thanks to meditation.   And, I hope to help others find their grounding, too.

Testimonials

Hello, again! Welcome to the re-launch!

Yoga for Runners

From Grant:

Erin is an incredible coach with a unique, personalized approach to help anyone regain more confidence in their movement.

I came to Erin with chronic misalignment issues that kept resulting in little injuries. I was frustrated and felt as if I was falling behind. In our first session, Erin gave me a few drills. My movement patterns improved. Within a week of following the home program, I began to feel my body relax into place which helped me feel more safe in my movement and also while being still (I can sit, stand, lie down with relaxation). I am able to explore through movement with safety and I have some new tools from Erin to help me get back to equilibrium when things don't feel right.

I highly recommend Erin to anyone especially if you are dealing with pain, discomfort, chronic injury, etc. Trust the process of your body and brain learning/unlearning, do the home work, and allow Erin to guide you through this magical process!

From Julie:

Erin is a fantastic coach! Between work, travel, and personal commitments, I didn't have a lot of free time but really wanted to get a step closer to that BQ. Working with Erin, I was able to bring more structure into my weekly training while still maintaining flexibility. More importantly, Erin gave me perspective - quality miles over sheer quantity. I can't wait to work with Erin again on my next race.

From Matt:

I'm extremely grateful to have been working with Erin twice a week for the past two years. In that time, Erin has pushed me physically and mentally more than I ever expected. Erin's thoughtful approach to training ensures that every session I am constantly learning, growing, and making progress towards my physical and mental milestones.

Every workout I leave with a sense of accomplishment and with clear headspace. Training with Erin resulted in better habits, routines, and clear headedness outside of the gym too.

I never thought I would be as physically fit as I am today and I never thought that working with a trainer could improve the quality of my life as much as has been.

From Ali:

I'm so thankful I found Erin! She's the first trainer to see past the surface symptoms of my chronic pain and help me address the issue more holistically. She's extremely knowledgable about the latest in pain management/neuroscience research and has designed a personalized "brain training" plan that's -- at long last -- getting to the root of my pain issues. She's terrific at explaining everything in understandable terms and providing visualizations that really make a difference in how I perceive my progress. Most importantly, she's kind, inspiring, patient, and fun to work with. Thank you Erin for giving me hope!

From Luke:

Erin takes an approach to conditioning and injury recovery that is less revolutionary than straight out transformational! I had given up on my back pain, but after just a few sessions it gave up on me first - and I was moving again for the first time in months.

From Andy:

Erin is the best trainer I've ever worked with. She is very thoughtful in working around injuries and focusing on movement and flexibility as well as strength. I leave each session absolutely exhausted but extremely happy :)
